Tobias “Barking Dog” Kryatt

Born in the Frozen north town of “Snow Fort” to the parents Talwynn and Laneth Kryatt. His father was a simple farmer and made just enough to support the family. At an early age Tobias began working on the family farm. Life was hard but not without it’s joys for children of the farm. Tobias was the second child of four to his parents. He had an older sister and a younger brother and younger still sister. The four helped on the farm as they grew. When Tobias was 7 a plague descended upon the fort town and even the regional lord sucome to the sickness. Tobias’s entire family perished to what came to be known as “ The Red Flu”. With over ¾ of the towns population decimated, no one was able to take Tobias in. He stayed in his family home on the verge of starvation for several weeks after the pandemic had passed, until the weakened defenses of the city were attacked by wildmen tribes. The city was easily taken and fires broke out across the town. Tobias was scooped up by one of the attackers and taken prisoner. He was blindfolded and dragged back to the wildmens camp. He was presented to the chieftain who would decide his fate.

The great chieftain Pinestream, was kind to the frightened Tobias and offered him a warm meal and fresh furs. Pinestream was aware of the plague that struck the city and attacked it to not only cleanse the area, but because of a vision the Chieftain had in meeting a broken boy who would become a great warrior.

Tobias was told he had to choices. Become part of the village or to face the trials to join the warrior children of the tribe, or stay a slave. Pinestream gave Tobias the night to think of this, giving him dream tea to help him sleep.

In the night Tobias had vivid dreams of battle, of blood, and of his parents. In the morning he awoke and spoke to the chieftain and accepted the invitation to take part in the trials.

That same day Tobias began.

He was given a hatchet of stone, striped down to his bare loins and told to go into the forest of frost oak, and to not return until he had defeated the Varlack a giant dire wolf. He would not return for several years. In the woods he learned to survive off the land, move with stealth, and although he lost track of time he knew by the seasons that past he was in his 11th year of life. In that year he found the direwolf and after a fierce battle slayed the beast. He took the pelt for proof and wore it with pride.

The weak defenseless farmers child had grown up quickly. He never wanted to be weak again and even though the wildmen had attacked his town, he admired there strength and wished to return to them and so he did.

Upon his return he was greeted with joy and celebration. Welcomed fully into the tribe and given the clan title of “Barking Dog”. Tobias for the first time in a long time was full of joy. Many more
years passed. He grew apart of the tribe and integrated completely. The harsh winters and brief summers passed again and again. He raided, fought other tribes, hunted, and became a prominent member of the clan. He even took the chieftain’s daughter Imoco for wife. She was a fierce and proud women. One spring chief pinestream’s lifeforce began to fade. He called a meeting of the village elders to elect a new chief. Several days passed and barking dog was called into the chiefs tent and presented with the war axe of the tribe “Soul Feller”. He was now chief

He ruled his tribe as no chief had done before. Over time he even united many other tribes under his banner. His people prospered and became honored and feared in the north.

One night as he was asleep in his tent, his camp was attacked by the local kingdom at Greenhaven. He was outnumbered by many and was easily taken prisoner. This was Tobias’s 25th year

Many weeks passed as Tobias sat in a dark prison cell in the dungeons of a keep. He was released but escorted away in chains by a fat man of very noble dress. The fat man introduced himself as viceroy Emer Ogwaith. In his hands he carried Soul Feller. He talked as they walked, escorted by guards in full battle plate on either side. Ogwaith informed Tobias that he belonged him now and would travel to the far south to become a fighter in the pits of Cragport, and that his people would be spared and set free if he agreed to come quietly. So he did.

Tobias was given Soul Feller again upon arrival at the training camp outside Cragport. There he fought as a belonging of Emer Ogwaith who was, surprisingly well mannered. Tobias had heard most “masters” beat, and mistreated fighters, but Tobias was treated with respect and was almost a “human” to Emer. “As long as you win Dog, you will be treated like a prince”, and win he did. Over many years Tobias was undefeated. Facing down man and beast alike. His pelt from the dire wolf Varlack, and the battle axe Soul Feller his only memories. Of his wife, of his home. He kept battling, until Emer granted him his freedom after years of faithful service. He left the pits as a champion and very wealthy. Scars around his body, and a scar fresh across his face, but alive. He traveled back north in search of what was forcibly taken from him. It was his 37th year.

He returned to nothing. No tribe, no wife, nothing. There was no sign that they had even existed. He traveled to the town of Greenhaven to find out what had happened 17 years ago. He found the constable who remembered his pelt and explained how the entire tribe had been broken up, and forcibly integrated into society in town. Tobias searched for his wife but no one knew her name, or had ever heard of her. With no tribe, no battles to fight, little to live for. Tobias turned to what seemed like the opposite what most would expect. Politics. He wanted to bring peace to the north. To keep the culture of the tribesmen alive, to make fighting in the pits illegal as widly as influence could reach. He was able to strike a deal, pay off people, swindle, lie, and work his way into the Greenhaven senate as a representative of the Wildmen of the North. He worked for his people’s interests for many years before being sent to the capital city as a Tribesman, as they became called now, Ambassador. It was his 49th year.
